The final declaration of the Conference on the Importance of Kurdish National Unity states, “Our conference called on Kurdish political parties, civil society organizations, and opinion leaders to unite under the umbrella of National Unity.”
The Initiative for Democratic Unity organized a conference entitled “The Importance of Kurdish National Unity” in the Doğubeyazıt district of Ağrı under the slogan “With the goal of unity on the path to peace”.
The conference addressed the historical significance of national unity in the Kurdish liberation struggle and was dedicated to figures such as Feqiyê Teyran, Şêx Seîd, Seyid Rıza, Leyla Qasim, and #Ehmedê Xanî# as pioneers of a united Kurdish consciousness.
The final declaration of the conference, announced at the Ehmedê Xanî Tomb in the district, stated the following:
Our conference commemorated with great gratitude and respect all Kurdish leaders, organizations, and individuals who have kept alive and carried on the spirit, will, and demand for national unity throughout our people's history of struggle, despite all internal and external obstacles, and reaffirmed unwavering determination and resolve to achieve the national unity they envisioned, guided by their heroic struggles.
The conference assessed the failure to achieve our national unity as the reason for our inability to achieve success. It emphasized that the values, gains, experiences, and lessons revealed by our struggle for democracy and freedom, which has continued for more than half a century, have formed a crucial memory in the direction of achieving our National Unity; and that this memory holds historical significance in the realization of our National Unity. Our conference evaluated the political and social developments in the Middle East, Kurdistan, and Turkey in a multidimensional manner in light of this historical reality, drawing attention to the fact that the Middle East, particularly Syria, is undergoing a major social upheaval.
Our conference emphasized the vital importance of the developments in Syria following the collapse of the Assad dictatorship and the urgent need for Kurdish national unity, and saluted the Kurdish National Conference held in Qamishlo. It noted that the National Conference holds historical significance and importance, and that it should serve as a model for all parts of Kurdistan. It emphasized that all Kurdish organizations and democratic political forces must engage in a struggle and work to promote this spirit of unity and to give concrete institutional expression to the National Unity, as a vital responsibility. Our conference considered the attacks and massacres carried out by the Sharaa regime in Syria, first against the Alawite people and then against the Druze people, as a threatening development for all the peoples of Syria. It highlighted the importance of Syrian society, with its multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, and multi-faith mosaic, achieving a democratic-federal system of government.
The conference determined that the Kurdish people are an important and indispensable actor for change and transformation in the process of redesigning the Middle East in political, military, organizational, and paradigmatic terms. In this new conjuncture of the Middle East, it emphasized that the Kurdish people hold a decisive position in the development of the process as a subject that must be taken into account in the tactical and strategic planning and decision-making of all actors. In light of this reality, it pointed out that there are significant opportunities for building a democratic Syria, as well as important threats; therefore, it assessed that unity and alliances among all Syrian peoples are vital. The socio-political developments in the Middle East, Turkey, and the four parts of Kurdistan have made the need for national unity even more crucial. The Kurdish people have responded to this need with the conference they held.
Today, we are at a critical juncture in history, a period of critical reestablishment for all Kurdish structures, religious communities, and cultural identities. The conference emphasized that it is vital for the Kurds to secure Kurdish unity and a national alliance in order to achieve status for their identity, and that this requires patience and determination.
In light of all these developments, our conference emphasized the historical significance of Abdullah Öcalan's call for peace and democratic society on February 27, 2025, and comprehensively assessed the fact that this call has created a positive impact at the national and international levels, as well as regional and global scales, thereby raising expectations and hopes for a democratic solution to the Kurdish issue in Turkey and fostering an extremely positive political atmosphere.
Our conference, which considers Abdullah Öcalan's call for peace and democratic society as a sign of a new process for the realization of social peace, emphasized that all political parties, civil society organizations, academic circles, opinion leaders, women, and youth in Turkey and Kurdistan bear the responsibility of institutionalizing the Democratic Society organization in a way that includes all segments of society in order to ensure the successful outcome of this process.
Our conference highlighted the pioneering role of women and youth in the realization of a democratic society and social peace. In this context, it emphasized that democratic politics has gained strategic importance in this process and must undergo change and transformation at a level that responds to the spirit and requirements of the process.
The PKK's decision to disband and end the armed struggle has paved the way for a transition to peace. Women took the lead in the weapon-burning ceremony in the city of Sulaymaniyah, demonstrating great faith and determination in response to the call of Mr. Abdullah Öcalan. With the weapon-burning ceremony, it showed the national and international community that it approached the Democratic Society and Peace Process strategically.
In this sense, our conference emphasized the importance of the Turkish state and government taking strategic steps without delaying political and legal measures. Now is the time for all the peoples of Turkey to win together. In conclusion, our conference called on Kurdish political parties, civil society organizations, and opinion leaders to unite under the umbrella of national unity.[1]
