Die UNESCO hat das Jahr 1981 zum Jahr Atatürks anläßlich seines hundertsten Geburtstags erklärt, um damit seine Bedeutung für den Befreiungskampf nicht nur derTürken, sondern aller unterdrückten Völker gegen Imperialismus und Kolonialismus zu würdigen.
Für die Kurden bedeutet der Kemalismus jedoch bis heute Teilung, Unterdrückung, kulturelle Vernichtung.
Angesichts dieser Tatsache, die auch von den Vereinigten Nationen beharrlich ignoriert werden, schrieb der türkische Soziologe und Schriftsteller Besikçi, der wegen seiner Schriften seit 1981 im Kerker sitzt, seinen Brief an die UNESCO in dem er die Widersprüche zwischen Kemal Atatürks Reden und seiner Realpolitik gegen die Kurden aufdeckt. Laut türkischer Verfassung gibt es kein kurdisches Volk, die kurdische Sprache ist in Wort und Schrift bei strengster Strafe verboten, kurdische Bräuche und Traditionen sind unterdrückt.
