Sherko Kermanj was born in Erbil. He left Kurdistan in 1991 and spent two years as a refugee in Iran.
He moved to Australia in 1993 and now lives there. Sherko graduated in civil engineering in Kurdistan.
He later graduated in civil and environmental engineering in Australia. He holds a master's degree in 2004 and a doctorate in international relations from the University of South Australia in 2010.
Sherko is the author of Identity and Country in Iraq, published in 2013 in English by Lynn Rainer Publishing House in the United States. The book was translated into Arabic and published in 2015 by Aras organisation and Dar Al-Saqi in Lebanon.
In 2017, the book Identity of Iraq: Its Ethnic and Religious Conflicts was published by Sardam Publishing House. His book Politicization of Islam was published in 2005 by Sardam Publishing House and in 2019 by Andesha Publishing House.
Sherko has participated in dozens of international conferences and presented research on Kurdish issues, Iraq, and Islam. He has published eighteen articles and books in English and regularly publishes articles and research in Kurdish newspapers and magazines.
Sherko returned to Kurdistan in 2010 for 18 months, working as Director of Qualifications in the Ministry of Higher Education and teaching at Salahaddin University. Later, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of South Australia for a year. Since 2013, he has been a lecturer at the School of International Studies at the University of Uttar Pradesh, Malaysia for four years. Since 2018, he has been an Assistant Professor in the Department of International Relations at Sharjah University in the UAE and an Adjunct Professor at Koya University in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq.[1]
