Besides other minerals, iraq’s Kurdistan and Balochistan rest atop vast reserves of crude oil and natural gas respectively. iraq is one of the top holders of proven oil reserves in the world—estimated to hold over
149 billion barrels of proven crude oil reserves. 1 approximately 20 per cent of these oil resources (45 billion barrels) 2 are located in Kurdish territory in northern iraq. [1]
