Getrude Bell

Getrude Bell
Gertrude Bell, “die ungekrönte Königin des Irak”, wuchs behütet und verwöhnt in einem sehr reichen Haus auf. Ihr Vater besaß den größten Stahl- und Kohlehandel Nordenglands. Sie studierte in Oxford Geschichte zu einer Zeit, in der das Frauenstudium noch eine Seltenheit war. Früh interessierte sie sich für Geschichte, Sprache und Kultur der arabischen Welt. Sie lernte Arabisch, Persisch und Türkisch und begann als junge Frau, den Nahen und Mittleren Osten zu bereisen. Sie stellte sich selbst Routen zusammen und ritt auf Pferden oder Kamelen durch die syrische und arabische Wüste. Begleitet wurde sie von einem Troß bestehend aus einem Koch, Dienern und Bewaffneten zu ihrem Schutz. Maultiere transportierten ihre Ausrüstung, dazu gehörten ihr feines Porzellan, Abendkleider, Hüte und eine Badewanne aus festem Leinen. Bei manchem Beduinenscheich war sie zu Gast.

Durch ihre abenteuerlichen Reisen, Zeitschriftenartikel und Buchveröffentlichungen war Gertrude Bell zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts in England und im Nahen Osten bald eine sehr bekannte Persönlichkeit. Sie wurde geachtet und verehrt. Man schätzte das Gespräch mit ihr und vertraute ihr wertvolle Informationen an. So wurde sie zur wichtigen Informantin für das britische Imperium, dem sie als Beraterin von Winston Churchill wichtige politische Dienste leistete. Sie war befreundet mit Lawrence of Arabia, dem sie half, einen Araberaufstand gegen die Türken anzuzetteln. Sie wirkte bei der Inthronisation König Feisals I. von Irak mit und stand auch ihm beratend zur Seite. Ihre archäologischen Arbeiten sind nicht unbedeutend, sie erforschte und vermaß alte Wüstenburgen und nahm an Ausgrabungen teil. In Bagdad, ihrem letzten Wohnsitz, wo sie in der Nacht vom 11. zum 12. Juli (wahrscheinlich an einer Überdosis Schlaftabletten) starb, begründete sie ein Antikenmuseum, dem sie ihre 3000 gesammelten Kunstschätze übergab.

Gertrude Bell war eine entschiedene Gegnerin der englischen Suffragetten; sie empfand deren Kampf um Gleichberechtigung als indezent.[1]
