Depuis le partage de leur pays, dans les années 1920, les Kurdes ne cessent de se battre pour disposer d'une existence nationale propre et reconnue. Au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, cette aspiration a pu se réaliser, pour une brève période, sur une portion du territoire kurde centrée autour de la ville de Mahabad, située entre les zones d'occupation soviétique et britannique dans l'Ouest de l'lran où en janvier 1946 une République kurde fut proclamée.
Ce premier et unique Etat kurde du XXe siècle, qui ne dura que onze mois, occupe une place particulière dans l'histoire et l'imaginaire kurdes. Près d'un demi-siècle après son effondrement, les bardes et troubadours continuent de chanter ses réalisations et ses héros et de perpétuer ainsi son souvenir. [1]
