He was born in 1946 in the city of Sina, East Kurdistan. Initially, e learned the beginnings of music from his father Hassan Kamkari in his hometown of Sina. After receiving his diploma in natural sciences, he went to Tehran and studied music for two years under the guidance of Hossein Dehlavi at the Higher Night Music School. He then returned to Sina as a musician and taught music.
In 1972, Hoshang Kamkar entered the College of Music of Tehran University of Fine Arts and obtained a bachelor's degree in composition from Tehran University. He then went to Rome, Italy, on a scholarship offered by the country and spent a year and a half there studying counterpuan and fugue techniques at the Conservatory of Santacci Chile in Rome.
In the year 1976, he left for the United States of America, where he obtained a master's degree in music history from San Francisco State University.
In the year 1979, he returned to Iran and taught music at Farabi University and the College of Fine Arts of Tehran University.
Kamkar taught music at the University of Arts for 10 years and conducted the university's music group for six years from 1993 to 1999. From 1989 to the present, he has been the director of Kamkaran Music Group.
Hoshang Kamkar has been the conductor of the Bahman Dictionary Symphony Orchestra in Tehran for many years. Since 1997, he has been conducting Kamkaran Music Azadi Arts in Tehran.
Hoshang Kamkar's cultural activities include composing, translating and writing books on music and participating in music conferences abroad.
