Kurdische Musik – Gattungen und Struktur

Kurdische Musik – Gattungen und Struktur
Autor: Jalil Asid
Erscheinungsort: Schweiz

After an overview of the history, language, and distribution of the population of the Kurds and a look at the historical and ethnographic context of their music as well as their instruments, this dissertation offers first a systematic representation of the different musical types and their context as well as the practice of Kurdish music in the course of the 20th century. The territory of modern day Kurdistan also includes other ethnic minorities. The total music practiced within Kurdish territory, therefore, one calls Kurdistani Music in contrast to the notion of Kurdish Music, which relates to the music of the Kurds only. Indeed, the dissertation is exclusively devoted to the latter as it is practiced within the total territory of Kurdistan that is currently divided between the states of Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and Syria, as well as Armenia, where for a long time a strong Kurdish minority has lived. In the course of the dissertation, it will be demonstrated that the music of the Kurds in accord with a certain rhythmic criterion lends itself to being divided into two main types, which, in turn, according to musical form, can be divided even further into sub-categories, whereby the manifold relationships between them —similarities and differences— can be established. In this sense the dissertation offers the theoretical foundation for aesthetic inquiry as its subject—which carries implications for further study, as, for example, in the case of the prominent but only summary treatment of the practice of the Meqam. In the dissertation under consideration the author followed two principle concerns above all: First, to offer more and more accurate information on the subject than the heretofore published reference books have provided. Second, that the investigation of the music should be stimulating in order to increase further interest in the subject.[1]
