Kaws Nuri Abdulrahman Qaftan was born in February 1934 in Sulaymaniyah.
In 1953, he was admitted to the College of Education of Baghdad University. In 1957, he was employed as a teacher in Sulaymaniyah.
In 1958, he became a member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and a year later, in 1959, he participated in the World Youth Congress in Romania.
In 1960, he went to the former Soviet Union to complete his doctorate. In 1961, he became a member of the Secretariat of the Kurdish Students Association in Europe.
Dr. Kaws Qaftan got married in the year 1962. In 1963 he became a researcher in the Kurdish department of the Leningrad Institute of Oriental Studies.
In 1966, he returned to his homeland and was employed as a teacher in the College of Education of Baghdad University.
He was an active member of the Kurdish Information Forum for the service and promotion of the Kurdish language, which was established in the second half of the 1970s in Baghdad.
From 1971 to 2000, he taught in the College of Education and the College of Arts of Baghdad University. In 2000, he returned to Sulaymaniyah and was employed in the Department of History of the College of Humanities of Sulaymaniyah University.
Dr. Kaws Qaftan has several scientific and historical works, several books and scientific research translated from Russian into Kurdish.
