She is the eldest daughter of Sheikh Salam Sheikh Ahmad Azaban of Warmawa village. She was born in 1922 in Sulaymaniyah. She completed her primary and secondary education in Sulaymaniyah and Halabja. She graduated from the Teacher's Institute in Baghdad. Nahida Sheikh Salam played a major role in spreading literacy, she taught her students many national anthems, composing music for them. Nahida Sheikh Salam was the first woman to open the first kindergarten in Sulaymaniyah. She was involved in political struggle since her youth and was a prominent member of the Hiwa Party.
Nahida Sheikh Salam played a significant role in the establishment of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and was the first woman to become a member of the central committee of the KDP.
Nahida Sheikh Salam was a founding member and head of the Kurdistan Women's Union. After the July 14 revolution, she was elected a member of the Iraqi Peace Council.
Nahida Sheikh Salam has been exiled to southern Iraq or fled to the liberated areas several times for her political activities.
Nahida Sheikh Salam passed away on 28-11-2006 and was buried in Saywan Hill in Sulaymaniyah.
She is the founder of the Kurdistan Women's Union. She is the wife of late Noori Shawais and the mother of the late Dr Rozh Noori Shawais.


Political Struggles


Teacher and politician Nahida Salam Ahmad known as (Nahida Sheikh Salam, Kurdish girl, N. S. and Mother of Rozh) In 1960, she was nominated by President Mustafa Barzani for the post of Central Committee member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) at the Fifth Congress held in Baghdad. She was elected as the first woman to become a member of the Central Committee. Nahida Salam Ahmad was born in 1922 in Sulaymaniyah, the daughter of the patriotic poet Sheikh Salam (1892-1959). In 1930 she completed her primary education in Chamchamal township. In 1941, she graduated from the Baghdad Primary Teachers College and was employed as a primary teacher. In 1946, she married engineer Noori Sadiq Ali (1922-1983), also known as Noori Shawais. Mother of Dr. Rozh Noori Shawais a member of the Political Bureau of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and Brusk Noori Sadiq Shawais, a member of the Central Committee of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP). She wrote in Kurdish newspapers and magazines under the name the Kurdish Girl N.S or Mother of Rozh. She passed away on November 28, 2006, in Erbil and was buried in Saywan Hill Cemetery in Sulaiymaniyah next to her father Sheikh Salam. She knew both Kurdish and Arabic. In 1939 she joined the Kurdish Hiwa Party, in 1944 she joined the Right Way Party, in the same year she became a member of the Kurdish Revival Association (ZK) and in 1945 she became a member of the Kurdish Liberation Party. In 1946 she joined the ranks of the Kurdish Democratic Party. In 1959, she headed the delegation of the Kurdistan Women's Union to visit Zaim Abdulkarim Qasim (1914-1963) and was wounded in an assassination attempt. In 1959, she participated in the Fourth Congress of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) as a representative of the first branch committee. In 1960, she was nominated by President Mustafa Barzani for the post of Central Committee member She was elected as a member of the Central Committee of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and is the first woman to become a member of the Central Committee of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP). In 1964, she did not participate in the Mawat meeting organized by the Political Bureau wing of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in which a decision was made against President Mustafa Barzani. In 1974, she was expelled from the liberated areas of the September Revolution by the Ba'ath Party authorities after her house was looted. In 1974-1975, she fled to Iran as a refugee. In 1975, after the collapse of the September Revolution, she returned to South Kurdistan. She passed away on November 28, 2006, in Erbil and was buried in Saywan Hill Cemetery in Sulaymaniyah next to his father Sheikh Salam.[1]
