Statement by
Jim Karygiannis, Councillor,
Ward 39, Scarborough-Agincourt
It was with great sadness that I learned of the 7.3 magnitude earthquake which hit Kermashah province last evening.
My thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of those who perished and I pray for the speedy recovery of those who were injured.
The epicenter was 32 kilometres south-southwest of Halabja. I have walked the streets of Halabja and Sulaymaniyah. I have met the people who live there. they have suffered much in the past and now must endure this natural disaster. My heart is with them at this trying time.
I urge everyone to follow the instructions issued by local government authorities. I also want to thank all those who have rushed to assist in the rescue and recovery efforts.
I will be working with the Kurdish and Iraqi community in Canada to come up with plans for relief assistance.
