Omar Saqi

Omar Saqi
Omar Saqi (1913-1973) became an educator in Kurdistan's primary schools in the early 1930s and taught the new generation of Kurds. In the 1950s he was appointed educational supervisor and wanted to translate every Arabic word into Kurdish. He even changed his name to Kurdish.
Omar Saqi played a significant role in the establishment of the Kurdish Writers Union - Erbil Branch. When Dr. Marf Khaznadar came to Erbil from Baghdad as a representative of the General Headquarters to discuss the opening of the Erbil Branch, he met with more than 15 writers. Omar Saqi was one of the writers in that meeting, which also included included Mohammad Mawlood Mam, Mullah Sharifi Rangarezani, Karim Sharaza, Omar Saqi, Madhat Bekhaw, Badrkhan Sindhi, Pirbal Mahmoud, Abdullah Pashew, Yousef Dargalayi, and others, along with Abdullah Haddad and Mahmood Zamdar. It was decided to submit a request to open a branch of the Kurdish Writers Union in Erbil. On #15-01-1971# the Union held its first congress.
Omar Saqi was asked to run for the branch's board of directors, but he refused, saying that he could not take this task and would leave the field for younger poets and writers. However, he constantly participated in all conferences, seminars, and congresses of the Writers Union and made useful suggestions and always insisted on the Kurdish position and the interests of Kurdish literature.
He was born #22-11-1913#. He died on #07-08-1973# in the Great Cemetery of the King of Erbil. A delegation of the Kurdish Writers Union was present at the grave and the president of the Erbil branch, the late Ezadin Faizi, laid a wreath on his grave.[2]
