He was born on August 16, 1946 in Mahabad, the capital of the Kurdistan Democratic Republic. His father and family were Peshmergas of the Barzan Revolution.
He completed his primary, secondary and high school education in Erbil.
In 1966-1967, he was admitted to the College of Science, Department of Chemistry, Mosul University, but was arrested for his political activities and expelled to Basra University. In 1972, he graduated from the university.
In 1963, he was arrested for three months in Musayyib for his political activities and Kurdish position. In 1968, he was arrested again in Rumadiya for his political activities.
In 1964 he became a member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and in 1970 he became a member of the Secretariat of the Kurdistan Students Union.
In 1972, he joined the September Revolution and became a Peshmerga.
In 1975, he fled to Iran after the coup, but there he helped the ever-living martyr Idris Barzani in organizing and assisting the revolution and refugees.
He played an active role in establishing the interim leadership, so in 1977 he rejoined the revolution.
In 1979, he became a member of the central committee of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and head of the 3rd and 5th branches.
In 1979, when the Ba'ath regime tried to assassinate President Barzani, Azad Barwari was present and was wounded in the attempt.
In 1982, he became the head of the PDK and Kurdistan Front Relations Bureau in Syria.
In 1993, he became a member of the Political Bureau of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and head of regional and national relations.
In 1996, he became the administrator of the Political Bureau and head of the Central Organization Bureau.
In 1999, he was re-elected as a member of the Political Bureau at the 12th Congress.
From 2001 to 2004, he was in charge of the Central Media Bureau.
He is married and has 2 children.
He is fluent in Kurdish, Arabic and Persian, as well as English and German to some extent.

In the sixth cabinet of the Kurdistan regional government, he became deputy prime minister.[1]
