Hiwa Abdulkarim Aziz (1978) is a Kurdish writer, journalist and civil activist. He was the leader of the Independent Youth List in the 2009 Kurdistan Parliamentary elections. He was the editor-in-chief of several newspapers and magazines, president and director of several organizations between 1997 and 2014. He has published more than (11) books in the field of research, literature and journalism and opened several documentary exhibitions. He has been arrested and imprisoned by the security agencies in Erbil several times for his writings and civil activities.

- Opening of the exhibition (Sunset of Love) in 2007 in front of the Erbil Institute of Fine Arts and in 2008 inside Salahaddin University.

Arrests and imprisonments:
- 1997 - Imprisoned overnight in Erbil on charges of opposing the ban on Newroz fire
- In 1998, he was arrested by the Erbil security forces for publishing the magazine Griani Kurdistan.
- In 2002, he was arrested by the General Security in Erbil for writing and publishing the book Turkmen, Turkish-speaking Kurdish. He was imprisoned for two months without being allowed to see his lawyer or relatives.
- Arrested by the security forces for a hunger strike against the killing of women at Salahaddin University.
- In 2005, he was arrested and tortured by the General Security in Erbil for leading a street demonstration against corruption.
- In 2011, he was accused of threatening people by the director of the Rzgari security in Erbil and imprisoned for five months.[1]
