در اواسط ماه مه 1929 در روستایی در منطقه قرداغ از توابع شهر سلیمانیە در خانواده ای تحصیل کرده از خانواده شیخان مردوخی به دنیا آمدە است.
او در سال 1948 در حالی کە معلم مدرسه اساتید روستایی در حله عراق بودە، در قیام سراسری آن سال شرکت و فعالیت داشت و برای اولین بار به مبارزات ملی پیوست.
در سال 1954 چندین بار مورد شکنجە قرار گرفتە است، در آن سال برای آخرین بار به شهر بازگشت و در سال 1955 در سلیمانیە ازدواج کرد و اولین خانەی زندگی مشترکش را در این شهر بنا نمود.
شیخ شاعران، تا انقلاب سال 1958 چندین بار بە مدتهای کوتاه به زندان افتادە است. با شعله انقلاب، شاعر به یکی از مشهورترین مقالە خوان و یکی از مشهورترین شاعران خلاق در میان مردم #کردستان# تبدیل می شود، از این رو با کودتای بعثی در سال 1963 بلافاصله دستگیر شد و نزدیک به سه سال در زندان (نوگرە سلمان) به همراه صدها جوان انقلابی، ده ها روشنفکر، شاعر، نویسنده و سیاستمداران بزرگ کرد و عرب به سر برد.
از اواخر سال 1965 تا 1969 به همراه همسر، سه پسر و سه دخترش به بغداد تبعید شد، هرچند زندگی سخت و طاقت فرسایی داشتند اما باز هم با افتخار زندگی میکردند.
در اوایل سال 1969 پس از هفت سال زندان و تبعید، اجازه بازگشت به کردستان را می گیرد. در سال 1983 دخترش (کژال حسیب قرداغی) در یک سانحه رانندگی، و در اواخر سال 1987 (بهار) دخترش بر اثر سرطان ناگهانی درگذشتند، و زخمی عمیق و بسیار سخت در اعماق احساسات و اندیشه های شاعر بر جای گذاشتند، کە تا آخر عمر اثر انگشتشان هم در ظاهر خودش و هم در عالم شعر و ادب نمایان بود.
در یک غروب سرد زمستانی در سلیمانیە در سال 1997-01-09 قلب دردمند شیخ الشعرا حسیب قرداغی برای آخرین بار تپید و فردای آن روز در تپه سیوان سلیمانیە یار همیشگی دو مرحوم کژال و بهار شد. از این شاعر فقید سه پسر (خبات، بهات و آزا)، یک دختر (نیگا) و همسرش (عایشه) به یادگار مانده است.
