Beim Kurdischen handelt es sich eigentlich um eine ganze Gruppe von miteinander eng verwandten Sprachvarietäten. SprachwissenschaftlerInnen vertreten unterschiedliche Meinungen in der Frage, ob es sich dabei um eine Sprache mit stark voneinander differie-renden Dialekten oder um miteinander eng verwandte Sprachen handelt. Da es bis heute keinen kurdischen Nationalstaat gibt, der eine bestimmte Varietät als Nationalsprache durchgesetzt hätte, muss die Frage, ob es sich dabei um eine oder um mehrere Sprachen handelt, offen bleiben.Zudem gibt es mehrere Bezeichnungen für jede Varietät. Der von uns benutzte Begriff „Kurdisch“ als Gesamtbezeichnung ist allerdings in unterschiedlichen Varietäten als Kurdî (in arabisch-persischer Schrift کوردی) vorhanden, wobei die Betonung auf dem ‚î‘ liegt.Der Begriff „Kurdisch“ – bzw. die drei Konsonanten k-r-d als Bezeichnung einer Region im Norden Mesopotamiens – geht möglicherweise bis auf mesopotamische Keilschrifttexte des 3. Jahrtausends vor Christus zurück. Allerdings wurde damals noch nicht die heutige Sprache damit bezeichnet. Die Sprache bzw. die verschiedenen Varietäten des Kurdi-schen, die allesamt zur nordwestiranischen Unterfamilie der iranischen Sprachen gehö-ren, sind wesentlich jüngeren Datums, da sie sich erst nach der Iranisierung der Region ab 1.000 vor Christus entwickelt haben. Die ursprüngliche Bedeutung der Konsonanten-folge k-r-d ist heute unbekannt.[1]
