Das historische Kernsiedlungsgebiet der Kurden verteilt sich heute auf die Territorien der Länder Türkei, Iran, Irak und Syrien, doch sind die Kurden ein Volk ohne eigenen
Nationalstaat. 1978 gründete #Abdullah Öcalan# die kurdische Arbeiterpartei PKK. Ab 1984 führte die PKK einen bewaffneten Kampf gegen die türkischen Sicherheitskräfte, in dem mittlerweile über 42 000 Menschen (vgl. Spiegel Online 2.11.2010) getötet, über 3000 Dörfer (vgl. LSE – The London School of Economics and Political Science 3.2.2011) zerstört und mindestens eine Million Menschen (vgl. NZZ Online 29.7.2010) vertrieben wurden.
Seit Sommer 2009 macht Regierungschef Erdogan der kurdischen Bevölkerung Hoffnung,den jahrelang geführten Konflikt zwischen Türken und Kurden zu beenden. Jedoch stieß dieses Projekt auf massiven Widerstand im Parlament. Die Meinungen über die „demokratische Öffnung“ divergieren sehr stark. Die Regierung Erdogan will mit dieser
Initiative die kulturellen, aber auch politischen Rechte der Kurden ausweiten. Besonders erwähnenswert ist hier der Gebrauch der kurdischen Sprache, der lange Zeit verboten war.Besondere Aufmerksamkeit wurde auch Abdullah Öcalan zuteil. Seine strenge Isolationshaft wurde aufgelockert. Seit seiner Festnahme im Jahr 1999 sitzt Öcalan als einziger Gefangener auf der Gefängnisinsel Imrali ein. Mittlerweile wurden weitere Häftlinge in das neu erbaute Gefängnis, das sich ebenfalls auf der Insel befindet, gebracht. Diese Veränderungen führten dazu, dass Mitte Oktober eine vierunddreißigköpfige kurdische Gruppe den irakisch–türkischen Grenzübergang Habur überschritt. Unter ihnen befanden sich acht PKK-Aktivisten, die von Staatsanwälten befragt und danach freigelassen wurden.Mittlerweile sind aber alle Habur-Rückkehrer inhaftiert.
Mit dem Verbot der pro-kurdischen Partei der demokratischen Gesellschaft (DTP) durch das Höchstgericht am 11.12.2009, gingen zum Teil bewaffnete Auseinandersetzungen zwischen ethnischen Kurden und Türken einher. Die verbliebenen Abgeordneten der DTP entschlossen sich der neu gegründeten pro-kurdischen Partei für Frieden und Demokratie (BDP) beizutreten und im Parlament weiter zu arbeiten. Es folgten zwei Verhaftungswellen,bei denen hunderte Parteifunktionäre festgenommen wurden.Im Mai 2010 beendete die PKK den 13 Monate zuvor ausgerufenen Waffenstillstand. Es folgten jedoch Anschläge mit zahlreichen Toten auf beiden Seiten. Nach einer erneuten Waffenruhe, die bis nach den Parlamentswahlen 2011 geplant war, hat sich die PKK jedoch entschlossen, auch diese wiederum aufzukündigen.[1]
