Khalis Bag Spkyi (1899-1977) was a Kurdish revolutionary and politician who helped in starting and continuation of Agri revolution, in North Kurdistan. He was born in the year 1899 in Dutakh of the city of Erzurum of the Northern part of Kurdistan. He was the son of one of the leaders (Swaya Hamidiyah), who was the chief of the Spki tribe. In the year 1927, he was one of the Peshmergas and leaders of the Agri Uprising, along with Ihsan Nuri Pasha and Farzand Beg. (as an offense to him the Turkish state had nicknamed him Öztürk, meaning good Turk). After defeating the Agri uprising, with the help of Iran, Britain and the Soviet Union, Khalis Beg was taken prisoner, but when he was being transferred in his way to Trabzon, he was able to escape and then move to the Eastern part of Kurdistan. After a general amnesty of the republic of Turkey, he returned to Turkey and entered politics and was elected to parliament three times on the list of the Democratic Party, which was against Mustafa Kemal Ataturk's party. After the 1960 coup, he was arrested and sentenced to 10 years in prison for allegedly working against the Turkish constitution. He spoke Kurdish during his trial, so they had to bring him an interpreter and translator. Khalis Beg was an intelligent, knowledgeable and cheerful patriot. He always tried to use his position and power to serve his people and nation. He passed away in the year 1977 at the age of 78.[1]
