#Karl May# (1842-1912) ist nach wie vor der erfolgreichste deutschsprachige Schriftsteller. Sein Gesamtwerk („Winnetou“, „Durch die Wüste“ u.v.a.) umfasst eine Auflage von weit über 100 Millionen Büchern, die in mehr als 40 Sprachen übersetzt und verfilmt wurden.
Vor dem Hintergrund aktueller Entwicklungen stellt die Ausstellung die Aktualität seiner Orienterzählungen zur Diskussion. Armenische, ezidische und kurdische Teams gestalten dazu eigene Ausstellungskapitel. Erstmals überhaupt wird damit die Lebenswirklichkeit der bei May beschriebenen Menschen von den heutigen Communities anhand spektakulärer und z.T. noch nie gezeigter Ausstellungsstücke geschildert. Viele der in Romanen wie „Durchs wilde Kurdistan“ (1892) beschriebenen Ethnien und Religionsgemeinschaften sind in ihren Herkunftsregionen Opfer von Terror und Unterdrückung. Als Teil unserer Gesellschaft sehen sie sich oft mit Populismus und Fremdenhass konfrontiert.
Anhand von zeitgenössischen Büchern, Landkarten und Dokumenten (u.a. Erstausgaben) werden die Inhalte und das historische Umfeld von Mays Romanen vorgestellt, kritisch hinterfragt und mit der heutigen Situation der Menschen im Nahen Osten und in Deutschland verglichen.[1]
