Title: Statelessness in Syria
Publisher: European Network on statelessness
Release date: 2019
Syria has a population of 18.5 million people, with the latest UN estimates suggesting it is home to 160,000 stateless persons. However, this estimate has not been updated since 2013 and explicitly excludes one of the two main stateless populations, the estimated 438,000 Palestinian refugees from Syria. Alongside gender discrimination in Syria’s Nationality Law, the lack of access to civil registration and barriers to registering vital civil status events have increased the risk of statelessness for Syrians both within and outside Syria.
This country position paper produced by the European Network on Statelessness and the Institute on Statelessness and Inclusion provides information on the profiles of stateless individuals and persons who may be at risk of statelessness due to nationality or civil documentation problems in Syria.
