The social, economic, and political situations of Kurdistan and other areas in which Kurds live have changed drastically during the last decades. The Kurds are now almost totally autonomous in Northern Iraq, building state institutions in Rojava (Syrian Kurdistan) and democratic autonomy in Northwest Kurdistan (eastern Anatolia). Politically, until the 1990s, Kurds were dominated and contentious players; however, they have become key players in the Near East. Kurdish interactions with regional powers - Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria - are my research interest which focuses upon ‘disputed boundaries’, and particularly in the applying of federal models. I am interested in renewing the approaches for self-determination, autonomy and federalism in the Kurdish Question, the continued repression in Turkey and Iran, accompanied by new forms of contestation, by the politics of recognition in Iraq, and toleration of the Assad regime. These different processes call for a renewed analysis of the transformation of the Kurdish national liberation movement comprising the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and Peoples’ Democracy Party (HDP). The central question of the paper deals with the peace talks between the AKP government and the Kurdish representatives who abandoned separatist demands in a 30-year long insurgency and developed federal solutions within the state’s borders.
